Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC Sign Definitive Agreement to Establish Joint Venture for Next-Generation Image Sensors

Partnership Overview

Sony Group's wholly owned subsidiary Sony Semiconductor Solutions has signed a definitive agreement to establish a joint venture with TSMC for the development and mass production of next-generation image sensors. The JV will include an existing investment factory in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, with mass production scheduled for 2029. Sony will be the 100% owner and the representative director is expected to be appointed from Sony.

Capital Structure and Outlook

The investment amounts will be disbursed in stages based on market conditions, and additional funding plans will be considered contingent on support from the Japanese government. Completion of the JV establishment and the transactions requires closing conditions such as approvals from relevant authorities. Sony will lead core technology development and product design for image sensors, leveraging TSMC's advanced process technology and manufacturing know-how to establish mass production, strengthen productization to meet customer needs, and enhance supply capabilities.
